The year 2004.
I started my first-ever SEO job at a private company back in 2004.
I began learning SEO with Google itself back in 2004 (I was 18), when Google started taking SEO seriously and improving geo-based search pages.
In 2004, Google launched several important key developments + SEO update:
- Gmail: Google introduced Gmail on April 1, 2004 (with 1GB storage)
- Orkut: Google launched its first social networking platform called ‘Orkut’ in January 2004.
- Advertising Evolution: In the year 2004, Google Ads started looking more like organic search results, with no ‘distinct’ color difference between ‘paid’ and ‘organic’ results.
- Initial Public Offering (IPO): Yes, Google went public on August 19, 2004.
- Search Algorithm Update (SEO update): The ‘Brandy’ update introduced semantic search and synonym understanding marking a significant improvement in search technology. Which further led to more attention to anchor text relevance.
What were our best SEO practices back then?
I am from the PR era. We used to be obsessed with Google’s PR (page rank) toolbar.

PR (page rank) was the only big thing back then, gaining PR-1 was fun, PR-3 means you are a rockstar, and Pr-5 means you are on the clouds.
(now a days we focus on DA when it comes to link building/competitors analysis/content creation etc.)
On-page optimization wasn’t that deep.
Link building was a big push then and is still a solid strategy.
What tools, and search engines were available back then?
